Safely improve our community
The risk is real. Let's underground today.
Work together as neighbors to bring more safety to our homes. Do not wait for a disaster; act now to protect our homes.

Newport Heights is one of the last remaining communities still lined with unsightly poles and tangled overhead wires.
✅ Boost Property Values: Buyers prefer homes without power lines. Lagging behind other neighborhoods could negatively impact our property values.
✅ Beautify Our Community: No more leaning poles, drooping wires, or obstructed views.
✅ Invest Now, Save Later: Construction costs are only rising. The longer we wait, the more expensive this project will become.
There are many potential benefits to undergrounding distribution infrastructure. Perhaps the most noticeable benefits are aesthetic. These benefits are arguably greatest along California’s miles of scenic highway, in parks and recreation areas, and in crowded urban environments, but there may be some benefit in almost any location. Along with aesthetic benefits comes possible increases in property value that accrue to homeowners along the route.
Additionally, there is enhanced safety and reliability. Converting powerlines to underground can eliminate safety issues that arise from vehicles crashing into poles or from vegetation igniting fire when contacting the overhead conductors. Infrastructure that is converted underground is also more reliable than overhead infrastructure. For example, it is less vulnerable to high winds brought about by Santa Ana winds, hurricanes and winter storms that can damage the poles and wires.
“What we should be doing in this city — and what we should do now — is take the opportunity to underground the power lines,...” -Rick Caruso
The city has a step by step guide. You can review it here:

We are collecting names and interest to discuss next steps with the city and if a formal district, or possibly a few in the Heights can be formed. Let's have a neighborly conversation about safety, costs and improvements.
We're working on state programs to assist lower-income homeowners, similar to those in Laguna Beach and Manhattan Beach. Other homeowners can finance the cost through their property taxes. The city offers bonds that spread payments over 20 years, transferring to a buyer if you sell. While exact costs won’t be known until the district is

Safer Newport Heights is a group of long time residents. We are dedicated to enhancing the safety of our community by undergrounding utility poles. Our goal is to reduce the risks associated with overhead lines and improve the aesthetics of our neighborhood. Newport Beach has already taken steps to underground power lines in most neighborhoods. Newport Heights is one of the last remaining communities still lined with unsightly poles and tangled overhead wires.
This is our opportunity to protect our homes, enhance our community, and invest in our future. Join us in advocating for undergrounding before it’s too late.
